SHABBAT Law #s02: "I forgot
to light the candles for Shabbat last Friday afternoon. What can I do?"
If a woman or girl forgets to light Shabbos candles, there is
a penalty. Starting the following week she must light an additional candle
each week.
There are many discussions among the rabbinical authorities
about when this candlelighting law applies. A few of them are:
-
If the forgetfulness is for a reason beyond her control;
-
If she forgot to light candles for a Festival does the
same rule apply;
-
If she forgot to light the same number of candles that
she normally lights, instead diminishing their number;
-
If there is an electric light that illuminates the room
anyhow.
In any case where there is a question whether the penalty isto
light an additional candle every week or maybe only the following week, a
qualified rabbi should be consulted as to the details.
