SHABBAT Law #s06: "Must I really say 100 blessings every day? How is it even possible to do so?"

There is a ruling dating back to the time of King David, and perhaps even earlier, that one must say one hundred blessings every day. On regular week days this is easy to achieve, when we say 19 blessing in each of the three Shemonei Esrei prayers

But on days when the Shemonei Esrei does not include all nineteen blessings, as on Shabbos and Yom Tov when instead there are only seven, and on fast days where there are no blessings before or after food and drink, one needs to keep careful count in order to ensure they really bless one hundred times.

There is a debate among contemporary authorities whether this law also applies to women and children, who may not pray all three services each day.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe stated publically that it is a custom to give children sweets and candies in order to train them in saying many blessings, so as to get to one hundred Brochos. The Rebbe also mentioned the idea of women saying one hundred blessings. This need not be considered an obligation, but rather a meritorious behavior. Still, there is clearly good reason for women and children to makethe effort to say one hundred blessings every day.
