SHABBAT Law #s09: "After
the man blesses the challah and eats a piece, in what order should he distribute
to the others at the table?"
At the Shabbos meals, after reciting the blessing over the
Challah and slicing a piece for himself, the man of the house should
cut another piece, an even larger piece, for his wife. In addition, some authorities
point out that according to Kabbalah, a husband should be sure to give his
wife her piece of Challah before he gives a piece to anyone else at the table,
even before [his parents, even before] very honored guests.
There are at least two reasons why the wife's slice is supposed
to be bigger: 1) according to Kabbalah, and 2) as required in Shulchan Aruch
that a man must honor his wife more than himself.
In general on Shabbos, one is supposed to give a large slice
to each person at the table so that they should have enough for the entire
meal [without having to request].
