WEEKDAY Law #w11: "Can I buy a cup of coffee in a coffe shop without a kashrut certificate?"

According to most rasbbinical authorities, with regard to coffee in general, the prohibition of not eating food cooked by a non-Jew does not apply to the preparing and brewing of coffee, because a cup of coffee is primarily water, and one is allowed to drink water that has been prepared and heated by a non-Jew.

However, it is known that the holy Ariof Tsfat, the master Kabbalist, was stringent in this matter and would not drink coffee prepared by a non-Jew. Nevertheless, most Poskim say that it is not an issue.

Of course, this leniency only pplies when there is no concern about the vessels used, such as whether the coffeemaker is also used for other drinks that are forbidden, such as those that include milk that is not Kosher, and possibly other forbidden liquids.

Also, even if there clearly is no propblem at all with the vessels and utensils, it should be noted that many authorities say that a person who guards his spiritual health should refrain from drinking in a non-Jewish coffeehouse [without rabbinicalsupervision].
